Doctoral thesis defence. Place: Dragvoll, NTNU (room D-6).

After more than 12 years of work, I had the opportunity to defend my thesis “From food to brand – Christian Johnsen’s clipfish trade in the period around 1850 – 1890”.
The debate, as well as two trial lectures, took place at NTNU on 25 and 26 April 2024, under the direction of Professor Karl Erik Haug, Department of Modern Social History. The committee’s work was led by Professor Pål Thonstad Sandvik, from the Department of Modern Social History. The opponents were Dr. Per Hallén, Gothenburg University, and associate professor, Kristin Ranestad from the University of Oslo.

The thesis describes the export of clipfish from Norway to a global market in the 1800s. In the thesis, I examine how Christian Johnsen coordinated processes at various stages in the production and export of clipfish. I am studying the disposal in the market, and the thesis provides insight into the conditions for the global trade in clipfish. Norwegian clipfish was for a period the market leader, and in the thesis I show how Johnsen created advantages for the export of Norwegian clipfish, and discuss the extent to which the player contributed to growth in the export trade in clipfish.
